"The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences" - Proverbs 18:21 (NLT)
Once upon a time, a king told one of his servants to bring him the best meat from the market. The servant brought him a tongue. The next day the king told the servant to bring him the worst meat from the market. The servant brought a tongue again. "What?" the king said. "When I asked for the best meat, you brought a tongue and then you brought the same thing for the worst meat." Then, the servant responded, "Sometimes a man is very unhappy because of his tongue and sometimes his tongue makes him very happy."
There is a muscle in the human body that can cause great heartache and pain, than all the other muscles put together. This muscle is responsible for most of the troubles, pains, betrayals, chaos, conflicts, strive, separations and divorces all over the world today. Fortunately, this same muscle has the tendency to produce ceaseless flow of joy, blessings, peace and victories whenever it is tamed and used properly. This muscle is known as "the tongue" (James 3:2-10)
"And so the tongue is a small part of the body yet it carries great power!... It can be compared to the sum total of wickedness and is the most dangerous part of our human body. It corrupts the entire body and is a hellish flame! It releases a fire that can burn throughout the course of human existence"- James 3:5-6 (TPT)
According to Matthew 15:18-19, there is a direct link
between the output of a man's tongue and the state of his heart. The muscles of
the tongue are wired to convert the content of the heart to words and transmit
same to the world. Therefore, the easiest way to know the state of a man's
heart is to pay close attention to the words that his tongue releases. If a
man's heart is polluted, his tongue will be unruly, deceitful, boastful,
arrogant, abusive etc. However, if a man's heart is renewed, his tongue will
produce blessings, unity, peace and joy at all times.
"But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you.” Matthew 15:18-20 (NLT)
Friends, what type of words is your tongue releasing? Are they sweet or bitter? What is the state of your heart? Is it defiled or pure? Remember, it is impossible to get a clean water or good fruit from a polluted fountain or tree (Luke 6:43). God cannot tame your tongue unless you give Him access to your heart. It is simply a matter of the heart. That is why it is crucial that you surrender your heart completely to God for cleansing and sanctification today.
One hymn that re-echoes God's counsel in James 1:26 is titled "Bridle Your Tongue".
BRIDLE YOUR TONGUE By Olusegun Ogundare, Aug 13, 2020.
1. Even as thou walk on in journey of faith
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
So that thine religion ‘ll be acceptable
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
Chorus:
Whoever that bridleth not his tongue
His religion is even in vain
The one that seeketh even to be perfect
Has to even bridle his tongue
2. And if thou even willeth to be perfect
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
And then you ‘ll be able to govern thine body
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
3. Tongue is a little member in the body
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
So as not to set thine body on fire
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
4. Even tongue is a fountain in our body
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
It’s not good that a fountain produces two things
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
5. Oh Lord set a watch even before my mouth
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
Keep he door of my lips from evil words
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
6. Let the word of my mouth mix with thy grace
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
That is seasoned even with the salt of grace
Thou even have to bridle thine tongue
May God set a watch over our mouths and keep us from releasing polluted words that can set our destinies ablaze in Jesus name, Amen.
Good day and God bless you.
Maranatha!
