THE FAKE GOLD MUSEUM

"And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever". 1 John 2:17 (NLT)

"The most popular museum in Peru, the Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) in Lima, is at the heart of an argument which is stirring archaeologists the world over but is also stirring the Peruvian government. After countless tests and 20 years of argument, the pre-Columbian gold pieces in the collection have been declared fakes. Reports suggested that 85% of the metal pieces on display were fakes." -- (J.G. Chueca, The Art Newspapers,  Jan. 9, 2002) 

The world is a fake gold museum and everything therein will soon fade away (1 John 2:17) like the fake jewelries, artifacts, and ornaments on display at the famous gold museum in Peru. If Demas had known that the glittering gold of this world is fake, he would not have abandoned his calling and walked away from the narrow path (2 Timothy 4:10). If the prodigal son had known that riches can develop wings and fly away like birds (Proverbs 23:4-5), he would not have left home and journey to a far country. The prodigal son wanted what the world had to offer but found himself ready to eat the corncobs of pigs thereafter (Luke 15:16). What a degrading and shameful situation! 

"Demas fell in love with this present world and has deserted me, going off to Thessalonica..." - 2 Timothy 4:10 (GNT)

Friends, have you loved this present world like Demas? Have you mortgaged your eternity for the fake gold of this world? Have you deserted Jesus? Have you relocated to Thessalonica like Demas? Why are you digging for fake gold at the expenses of your soul? Have you walked away from home like the prodigal son? Have you turned your back on God? Are you now living in the mud like pigs? Don't you think it's time to go back home? Like that prodigal son, please go back home today. Your heavenly Father is eagerly waiting to embrace and restore you. 

One special hymn that confronts every Demas and prodigal sons in every generation is titled "If I Gain The World, But I lost My Saviour". As you prayerfully meditate on the lyrics of this wonderful hymn, please trust God to restore all the Demas and prodigal sons/daughters around you today.

If I gained the world but lost the Savior,

Was my life worth living for a day?

And a name revered both far and near,

Yet no hope beyond, no harbor waiting,

Where my storm-tossed vessel I could steer;

If I gained the world but lost the Savior,

Who endured the cross and died for me,

Could then all the world afford a refuge,

Whither, in my anguish, I might flee?

O what emptiness!—without the Savior

’Mid the sins and sorrows here below!

And eternity, how dark without Him!

Only night and tears and endless woe!

What, though I might live without the Savior,

When I come to die, how would it be?

O to face the valley’s gloom without Him!

And without Him all eternity!

O the joy of having all in Jesus!

For my needs and more He will provide.

My prayer for you and my humble self is that the glittering gold and pleasures of this world (which will soon fade away) will not deny us the privilege of reigning with our Saviour in the real City of Gold (Heaven) in Jesus name. Amen.
