THE WORTH OF A SOUL

"What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?"- Mark 8:36-37 (MSG)

"What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? ”-Mark 8:36 -37 (KJV ).

A man who had been working in the gold fields and had acquired a fortune in Australia was on a ship, when a leak was discovered. The life-boats were lost, and the people were without hope. This strong man was about to spring into the water when a little girl, whose mother had been lost in the storm, asked him, “Sir, can you save me?” He looked at his belt of gold, and then at the child and then at the belt, and then at the child again. He threw the belt of gold away, took her on his back and threw himself into the sea. He struggled through the waves and with his life almost gone before he reached the land. The next day, when he regained consciousness the little girl put her arms around his neck and her lips to his cheek, and said, “I am so glad you saved me.”  That was worth more than all the gold in Australia. The story above corroborates the discussion that Jesus Christ had with his followers in Mark 8:34-38. Our Saviour used two simple questions to describe the worth of a man's soul. Jesus state categorically that the soul of a man is worth more than all the riches or precious stones in the whole world. It is the most valuable thing in the world, so valuable that God sent His only Son to the cross to suffer and die so that our soul may be saved/rescued from the leaking ship of this world (John 3:16). The worth of a soul made the Son of God to swap his golden mansions in heaven for the carpenters workshop in Bethlehem (Matthew 13:55). He threw away His golden belt of glory just to carry the old rugged cross and rescue the souls of terrible sinners like you and my humble self from eternal condemnation (Romans 5:8).

"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). 

The ship of this world is leaking badly and many precious souls that Christ died for are drowning daily. Friends, will you also drop your golden belt like Jesus Christ and the Australian gold miner to rescue all the hell bound souls in your neighbourhood?  The reward for soul winning outweighed every other human business dealings in the whole world. That is the greatest business that any man can venture into on earth. Can you imagine how you will feel when someone whom you have won for Christ meet you on the streets of gold and say, “I am so glad you preached that sermon, wrote that track, or sang that song; it saved my soul from hell”. 

"You often say, “it is still four more months until the plants in the farmers' fields will be ready for the harvest .” But I say that you should open your eyes. Look at the fields. The plants are ready for the harvest now. The workers are already bringing in the fruit and their master is paying them. As a result, people are receiving life forever with God. So, the person who plants the seeds will be very happy. And the person who brings in the fruits will also be very happy. Both of them will be happy together."- John 4:35-36 (EASY) 

The lyrics of a powerful song titled "Thank You" by Ray Boltz gives a graphical illustration of how soul winners will be rewarded and  celebrated on the street of gold. May I urge you to please prayerfully meditate on the lyrics of this wonderful song below and trust God for grace to sincerely drop your gold belt like the Australian man in the above story to rescue those precious souls that Jesus Christ died for.

My prayer for you and my humble self is that God will empower and use us mightily to rescue many drowning souls from the leaking ship of the world before the trumpet sounds. May our reward for winning souls on earth be great indeed in the city of gold. And may we never be drowned in the ocean after rescuing many souls from hell.
