THE BREAD AND BUTTER MENTALITY

"But the king said to Araunah, “No! I must pay you for everything. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for 50 shekels of silver" - 2 Samuel 24:24 (ERV)

Several years ago, David Livingstone, pioneer missionary to Africa, received a letter saying, “Have you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to know how to send other men to join you.” Livingstone replied, “If you have men who will come only if there is a good road, I do not want them. I want those who will come if there is no road at all.” (The Speaker’s Quote Book, Roy B. Zuck)

The greatest asset of God in every generation are men who are completely sold out to Him and His agenda for humanity like David Livingstone. Men who will not offer unto God what cost them nothing (2 Samuel 24:24). Those who will defile all odds just to do their master's bidding. Someone who will go on errand for God even when there is no road to the destination. God is in need of people with the blue ocean mindset; willing to step out for Him even when it is not convenient. Friends, are you one of such men or women in your generation? Are you rendering service that cost you nothing to God?

Unfortunately, many of us are not among those men that God can depend on in any generation. Unlike David Livingstone, many of us have the "bread and butter mentality" to kingdom duties. We are only available and willing to do the Lord's bidding when the path is clear and road smooth. Unlike King David, we only serve God if there is no cost implications. But we seem to have forgotten  that serving God is not a bread and butter business but a cross carrying venture (Luke 9:23). And if we refuse to do the Lord's bidding or render service of convenience to God, we will lose our eternal reward (Rev. 3:11). This will be very traumatic and painful!

"I am coming soon. So hold firmly to what you have, and no one will take away the crown you will be given as reward" Revelation 3:11(CEV)

The lyrics of a hymn titled "Let Someone Else" buttresses the salient issues that God is raising with us today. As you meditate on the lyrics of this wonderful hymn, please pray for grace to serve God faithfully so that someone else will not take your place and crown on the golden shore.

LET SOMEONE ELSE by James A. Sutherland, 1921.

Let someone else! you often say,

When asked to serve the Lord;

And someone else, when life is o’er,

Will reap a rich reward.

Oh, someone else is doing the work

That you for God should do;

And someone else will be wearing the crown

That God had meant for you.

Let someone else speak forth the word

To save a soul from sin;

That someone else, when Jesus comes,

A crown of life will win.

Oh, someone else is doing the work

That you for God should do;

And someone else will be wearing the crown

That God had meant for you.

Let someone else go forth, you say,

To lands beyond the seas;

While you remain at home and take

Your comfort and your ease.

Oh, someone else is doing the work

That you for God should do;

And someone else will be wearing the crown

That God had meant for you.

Oh, never let your lips again

Those thoughtless words repeat;

But pray that grace to you be giv’n

To serve at Jesus’ feet.

Then no one else will do the work

That you for God should do;

And no one else will be wearing the crown

That God has kept for you

May we receive grace to become like King David and David Livingstone so that someone else will not take our crown in Jesus name, Amen.
